It is becoming more and more known what CBD can do for managing pain. Sometimes this can be the only thing it is known for but surprisingly, there is a universe full of what it can do. It is actually somewhat difficult to get a complete list of its awesome properties because everyday new discoveries are being made and adding to it.
There is so much we are still learning that it can almost feel overwhelming.
Nonetheless, I’d like to explore some other pretty amazing perks involved because it is still highly underrated. Pain management can be a life saver and for some, that’s all that is needed. But that’s really just scratching the surface.
I am going to share with you several major benefits associated with CBD products.
A Little Science First
When you look at the body’s DNA some would believe that it is almost made to come in contact with cannabis. Vice versa, looking at the chemical compounds in cannabis some would say it is almost made for the body. On top of that, the plant grows naturally on the Earth which would mean to many that it is obviously here for a reason.
Majority of the body’s systems are regulated by Endocannabinoids which control internal homeostasis through cannabis-like molecules produced in the body. It was discovered that the Cannabis plant produces Phytocannabinoids which not only do the same for the plant, but also imitates our Endocannabinoids. The plants cannabinoids can bind with nearly every bodily system which is why CBD is being considered a dietary supplement now
There are those who claim CBD is a cure all but that is simply not true. CBD is more a health booster. It enhances your body’s natural performance in a way that is chemically familiar to your DNA. Not some man made substance that your system has to adjust to.
Epilepsy in Children
Numerous trials and case studies have shown that low doses of CBD have helped treat two forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
A medication infused with CBD oil, called Epidiolex, was formulated to help ease seizures associated with these syndromes. This medicine showed significant reduction in child epilepsy. At a low dose of 10 mg, it was observed that the children experienced many more positive benefits than any possible side effects such as lethargy or increased appetite. This is a good start since many of the meds available for epilepsy produce much more side effects.
So far, majority of the studies have been focused on these two rare forms of epilepsy since they seem to be much harder to treat and do not respond very well to typical medication. As more studies are done we will be able to see if other more common forms can be treated as well. The only issue in the way is the current law regarding cannabis and it’s use.
Cannabis is still very restricted so it is difficult to perform enough trials to see the full extent of CBD potential. Currently the information we have is limited but as laws change and more funding is allowed, we will see the world of CBD open up before our eyes.
Millions of people around the world suffer from mood disorders. Some can be so bad that they just can’t function throughout the day without some kind of prescription medication to help them. This is another area in which CBD has proven itself beneficial.
CBD has shown a tendency to enhance and stabilize your mood, bringing feelings of slight euphoria. It has been great for regulating emotions and mood fluctuations. Therefore, it’s pretty effective in treating anxiety and social phobia as well as improving symptoms of depression.
There are studies in progress to see how well CBD can benefit those suffering from ADHD, PTSD, and bipolar/mania disorder. In the meantime, we have seen a very positive reaction between CBD and the serotonin we produce. We’ve also discovered that it has the ability to protect neurons in the hippocampus. These abilities can help reduce any psychotic symptoms and work to promote a healthy limbic system.
The great thing about taking CBD is that it is not addictive. There are also way fewer side effects than regular prescription meds. Among those who take CBD, a preference has developed for cannabis over conventional mood disorder meds because it seems to be more effective or, when used together, lessen pharmaceutical side effects.
This one has to be probably the biggest lesser known benefit CBD has to offer us because it covers majority of our health issues. First let me start by explaining what oxidative stress is.
Your body experiences oxidative stress when there is an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals.
Free radicals are molecules that contain oxygen along with an uneven number of electrons. This allows them to react with other molecules causing chain reactions, which is the process of oxidation.
Antioxidants are molecules that donate electrons to free radicals to stabilize them and make them less reactive without harming themselves.
Oxidation is a normal process and it is something we need to function. Free radicals fight pathogens that lead to infections but it’s when there are more free radicals than our antioxidants can handle that the damage begins.
When oxidative stress is in motion it can damage your fatty tissues, proteins and even your DNA. This obviously makes up most of your body which means massive damage over time. This could be:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Neurodegenerative disease
There are a few environmental factors as well, like radiation and pollution but worst of all is cigarette smoke as this causes extreme oxidative stress.
There are ways to lower your oxidative damage like increasing your intake of antioxidants, exercising regularly and not smoking of course. Taking CBD will also greatly improve your oxidative stress levels as well by acting as a preventative measure.
To sum it all up
Cannabis is up and coming in the health field as a great way to manage pain but there is so much more to this wonderful plant as you can see. We are learning how to help people of all ages with a variety of ailments. This is only the beginning. We are on the road to a more natural and green world.
With baby steps we have taken leaps and bounds and have only just started. I hope this has helped you to understand a bit more about how awesome CBD is and how useful it can be for all of us.
Since we are still in the first stages of this journey it is advised, as with any new medical trend, to consult your doctor before use. Due to current laws there is still a lack of regulation and it is possible there could be potential interactions with other medicines so pregnant women or those on prescription medication should hold off until speaking with a medical professional.
